Common auto electrical jobs in Coffs Harbour Jetty

The Jetty precinct grew around the timber jetty finished in 1892 to ship out timber and produce. Today the International Marina, the foreshore and the Southern Breakwall draw boaties, anglers and charter operators, and their vehicles see more salt water than most.

Boat trailers at the marina

Trailers backed into the water near the marina come out dripping salt, and the lights pay for it. Wiring joints, lamp sockets and the plug at the drawbar corrode quickly. Submersible LED lamps, sealed connectors and a heavy earth wire running back to the plug last far longer than bulbs and body earths. Rinsing the trailer with fresh water after every launch helps too. Our guide on wiring a 7 pin trailer plug covers getting the pins right.

Dual batteries for early starts

Plenty of Jetty locals head out before dawn for fishing trips, with fridges, sounders and lights running from the tow vehicle. A second battery keeps all that load away from the starting battery, so the car still starts after a day on the water. The key choices are whether to use an isolator or a DC-DC charger, and how heavy the cable needs to be. Our guide on how a dual battery system works explains the options.

Corroded plugs and earths

Living a block or two from the harbour, salt finds its way into every exposed connection. Trailer sockets on tow bars are the first to go, followed by reversing camera plugs, number plate lights and earth points behind the rear bumper. A trailer that loses its indicators on the ramp, or a camera that cuts out in light rain, usually has a corroded pin. Cleaning, sealing and fitting a socket cover saves a lot of frustration.

Tow vehicle batteries

Backing a heavy boat up the ramp, then idling in the car park with the air on while the boat is tied down, puts real strain on a starting battery. Add a fridge running off the same battery overnight and it can be flat by morning. Testing the battery under load, then checking the alternator output and cable condition, shows where the weak link is. Our guide on testing a car battery covers the basic checks you can do yourself.

Coffs Harbour Jetty auto electrical questions

How often should I check the lights on my boat trailer?

Check them before every trip and give the plug a quick look after every launch. Salt water works into sockets and globes surprisingly fast, so a light that worked last weekend may not work today. Carrying a spare globe or a small test lead in the car means you can sort a fault at the ramp instead of driving home with no indicators.

Do I need an electric brake controller for my boat trailer?

It depends on the trailer's loaded weight and the rules that apply to it. Heavier trailers need brakes, and electric brakes need a controller in the tow vehicle. Many boat trailers use override or hydraulic brakes instead, which don't need a controller. Check your trailer's compliance plate and, if electric brakes are fitted, our guide on installing a brake controller explains the wiring.

Local tip for Coffs Harbour Jetty

Keep a tube of dielectric grease and a spare trailer plug in the glovebox if you launch at the marina often. After the boat is back on the trailer, unplug, rinse the plug and socket with fresh water, let them dry on the drive home, then grease the pins. It is a two-minute habit that saves rewiring the trailer every second year.
