Nambucca

The Nambucca Valley runs from the river mouth at Nambucca Heads up to the service town of Macksville and out to the beach villages of Scotts Head and Valla Beach. Auto electrical work here swings between salty boat trailers and holiday caravans on the coast and farm utes, trucks and buses inland.

Suburbs in Nambucca

The Nambucca area is four quite different places sharing one river valley. Nambucca Heads is the biggest town, built around the river mouth, the breakwall and a string of holiday parks. Macksville, about 13 km upstream, is the working centre, with a light industrial area off Gumma Road and the farm country of Taylors Arm behind it. Scotts Head and Valla Beach are smaller seaside villages reached off the Pacific Highway, which now bypasses both main towns. So one job might be a corroded trailer plug, the next a 24V fault on a truck.

Common auto electrical jobs in Nambucca

Salt air, river boating, holiday towing and rural work all show up in the faults we hear about across the valley. These are the jobs that come up most.

Boat trailers that live by the river

With the Nambucca River estuary on the doorstep, plenty of households in the valley own a tinny or a half-cabin and a trailer to match. Backing a trailer into salt water is hard on lights and wiring. Globes fail, earths corrode and the plug pins go green. Sealed LED lights, a clean earth back to the chassis and a quick hose down after every launch go a long way. Our guide on why trailer lights stop working is a good place to start.

Caravans heading up and down the coast

The Pacific Highway brings a steady stream of caravans past the valley, and many stop at holiday parks in Nambucca Heads, Scotts Head and Valla Beach. A common complaint is a van battery that is no better after a long tow. Modern vehicles with smart alternators often cannot charge a second battery well through the old style of wiring, which is why DC-DC chargers have become the usual fix. See our guide on why a caravan battery isn't charging while towing.

Farm utes and heavy vehicles inland

Behind Macksville the valley turns to grazing country, banana farms and timber, reached by roads like Taylors Arm Road. Farm utes collect extra lights, UHF radios and pumps, often wired in a hurry. Trucks and buses run 24V systems with their own alternators, batteries and lighting circuits. Loose accessory wiring and corroded joins cause a lot of intermittent faults. Proper fusing close to the battery and correctly sized cable make most of these problems go away.

Cars that sit between trips

Holiday homes, second cars and vehicles owned by retirees who do not drive every day are common along this stretch of coast. A modern car draws a small current even when locked, and in humid, salty air the terminals corrode as well. After a few weeks the battery may be too flat to start the engine. A battery maintainer or a regular longer drive helps. Our guide on cleaning corroded battery terminals covers the white crust that builds up near the coast.
