Common auto electrical jobs in Sawtell

Sawtell is a beach village sitting between Boambee Creek and Bonville Creek, with Bonville Headland at the southern end of the beach. Living this close to the water shapes the kind of electrical faults cars develop.

Corrosion from the sea and creeks

Cars garaged a few streets from Sawtell Beach, or parked under the fig trees on First Avenue, sit in moist, salty air most of the year. Salt gets into earth points, fuse boxes, plugs under the bonnet and the back of light housings. Faults show up as lights that work one day and not the next, a horn that stops or a slow crank. Cleaning connections, applying a protective spray and replacing badly corroded terminals keeps things reliable. A regular fresh-water rinse under the car after beach trips also helps.

Boat and kayak trailer lights

Bonville Creek and Boambee Creek are popular for fishing and paddling, so plenty of Sawtell households tow a small boat or a kayak trailer. Trailer lights that get dunked in salt water corrode quickly, especially old globe-type lights with steel housings. Sealed LED lights handle immersion better, and a waterproof plug with a bit of dielectric grease on the pins lasts longer. Our guide on how to wire a 7-pin trailer plug helps if the plug needs replacing.

Older beach cars

A lot of Sawtell driveways have an older car that does the beach run with surfboards on the roof and sandy feet inside. These cars tend to have tired wiring, worn switches and earth straps that have been rusting for years. Electric windows that stick, interior lights that stay on and dash lights that flicker are typical. Most of these are small, cheap fixes once the fault is found. Our guide on why an electric window stops working covers one of the most common.

Starting problems after sitting

Holiday homes and second cars in Sawtell can sit for weeks between uses. Combine that with salty air on the terminals and the battery is often flat or too weak to turn the engine over. Sometimes the battery is fine and the starter motor or its connections are the real problem. A click with no crank, or a crank that is slow even with a charged battery, points to the starter side. Our guide on is it my starter motor or my battery helps tell them apart.

Caravans heading out of town

Sawtell sits about halfway between Sydney and Brisbane, so locals with caravans head both ways on the Pacific Highway. Before a long trip, it pays to check that the van's battery is actually charging while you tow. A single thin cable from the car's battery to the van often drops too much voltage over the distance. A DC-DC charger and heavier cable fix most of these complaints. Our guide on why a caravan battery isn't charging while towing explains the details.

Sawtell auto electrical questions

My boat trailer lights stop working every few months. What can I do?

Salt water is the cause. Each launch lets water into the lights, the plug and any joins in the wiring, and it corrodes from the inside. Switch to sealed, submersible LED lights, use heat-shrink on every join and keep the plug greased. Rinse the trailer with fresh water after each trip, including the lights. Some people also unplug the trailer before backing down the ramp so hot globes aren't dunked.

Is it worth spraying the engine bay to stop corrosion?

A light coat of corrosion inhibitor on battery terminals, earth points and exposed plugs can help a lot near the beach. Don't soak the whole engine bay or spray into the alternator, sensors or air intake. Clean first, then protect. If you already have green or white powder on the terminals, that needs to come off properly before any spray will do much good.

How do I know if my car battery is ruined after the car has sat for weeks?

Charge it fully with a proper charger, let it rest for a few hours and then measure the voltage. A healthy battery should sit around 12.6 volts. If it drops quickly or won't take a charge, it may be damaged. A load test gives the real answer. Batteries left flat for long periods often lose capacity for good.

Local tip for Sawtell

If you live in Sawtell, check your car's battery terminals and earth strap every few months, especially if the car is parked outside. Salt build-up is gradual and easy to miss until the car won't start. A quick look under the bonnet, a wipe with a baking soda mix and a light protective coat take ten minutes and save a lot of hassle later.
